March, 1995
A new directory, *The Status of Human Rights Organizations in
Sub-Saharan Africa*, has been published by the International
Human Rights Internship Program (IHRIP) and the Swedish NGO
Foundation for Human Rights.
Based on field research during the period November 1993
through March 1994, it lists, describes and provides contact
information on organizations in 26 countries (Benin, Burkina
Faso, Cote d'Ivoire, Eritrea, Ethiopia, The Gambia, Ghana,
Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Kenya, Liberia, Malawi, Mali,
Mauritania, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal,
South Africa, Tanzania, Togo, Uganda, Zaire, Zambia and
Zimbabwe). There is also a short background note on the
situation in each country, and a list of the individuals
interviewed by the visiting researchers.
The preface notes that it is not a comprehensive inventory,
and that some of the information may be quickly outdated.
But the compilers, along with the nine researchers, all
themselves involved in human rights work and the majority
themselves Africans from countries other than the ones they
researched, have provided an excellent resource for all those
concerned with advancing human rights on the continent.
